Stunning Opals: A Trend Here to Stay

Lately, I’ve been totally enamored by opals, especially opal cocktail rings. Opals have become popular amongst designers more recently, but I like to think the opal holds a special, nostalgic place in my heart.

Maybe it’s because it reminds me of a cocktail ring that my sister inherited from my grandmother (that lucky lady)! Or maybe it’s that I’ve been fortunate enough to design lots of rings with opals lately.

A couple of months ago, a client of mine asked me to redesign an opal ring that her mother had given to her.

The heirloom ring was originally a gift from her father to her mother designed by the “family jeweler.” Both opals and this ring in particular held a truly special significance to Leigh (my client), as she was very closer to her dad AND she’s an October baby (hello, opal birthstones)!

Due to my recent opal obsession, I truly had a blast re-designing this piece. I wanted to be able to capture the essence of Leigh’s original style while still keeping the memory of her father alive.

The finished piece came out great! We went for 14K gold and diamonds to accent the simple ‘fire’ of the white opal.

I started becoming so obsessed with opals that I ended up designing a gorgeous yet simple ring for myself. Even though the opal is blue, it’s technically black.

I’m certainly not the only one who is obsessed with opals! I recently got a call from another one of my clients, Greg, who wanted to surprise his girlfriend, Jen, with an opal ring.

I found this amazing opal with incredible ‘fire’ for her!

The stone was set in rose gold and diamonds to accentuate the pink ‘fire’ in the stone.

Opals aren’t just for October babies anymore! In fact, it seems to me opals might just be a trend that is here to stay.
